Samuel Maiden, ACCA Trainee Accountant.

Did you enter the profession as a school leaver, graduate, or through another route?

After my ‘A’ levels I attended university before starting my training contract.

What career did you imagine for yourself when you were younger?

I always imagined a career in finance, though I hadn’t settled on the exact area.

What qualifications/training do you need for your role?

At CM, most ACCA trainees join with a degree. School leavers usually begin with the CAT qualification as an introduction, before progressing on to ACCA.

What do you enjoy most about working at CM Partners?

I enjoy the wide variety of work I’m involved in. It keeps my role interesting and allows me to continue developing new skills. I was given the opportunity to take some specific service lines, becoming proficient in some of the specific software packages that we use, including Staffology. I am delighted that I can now train and support my colleagues on this software.

What are the most important qualities you need in your role?

Attention to detail is essential, along with the ability to work efficiently and under pressure. Excellent communication skills are a must, and having passion for the role can go a long way.

What advice would you give to someone who is considering a career in accountancy?

Go for it! Accountancy is a career that demands commitment and resilience, especially when balancing work and exams, but the rewards are worth it. It gives you a strong professional foundation and skills that are valued across every industry and country, opening up a wide range of opportunities for the future.

The strong support for trainees is excellent. The managers and directors are highly experienced and are always willing to share their knowledge, which plays a big role in my professional development. Having a large trainee group within the firm also helps as it creates a supportive environment with others going through the same process.
