Your name and job title

Rebecca Dunne – Trainee Accountant

You relocated from the UK to the Isle of Man to start your Accountancy career with Crowe Morgan – why the Isle of Man?

The Island has a large, international, financial centre, supported by many accountancy firms, so it has great opportunities for anyone wishing to pursue a career in accountancy. On a more personal note, I was familiar with the Isle of Man having previously visited and the opportunity to live near the sea was a big draw. As a keen amateur photographer, the Island’s UNESCO Biosphere status means that there is plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife, and the lack of light pollution makes it a great place to capture the night sky. I have always loved history and it literally comes alive during the summer when you can take a trip along Douglas Promenade in a horse drawn tram. There is always something new to discover.

How have you settled into Isle of Man life?

I have settled in really well. I have joined numerous groups to meet people and make friends. There are clubs for every interest which allows you to meet like-minded individuals and learn new skills. Everyone has been so welcoming. Crowe Morgan organises staff social events which is a great way to get to know your colleagues in a more informal setting.

What do you particularly enjoy about life on the Isle of Man?

Living by the coast is incredible.  The coastline looks different every day offering incredible views when walking my dog. The proximity of the coastline, and the countryside, means that I can enjoy a great work life balance, even though I am studying in addition to my day job.  There is also a great community feel and even living in the capital city feels much safer than any UK city. The people have so much love and pride for their island and it can really be felt, especially during the many local events and traditions.

Would you recommend a relocation to the Isle of Man to any other accountancy professional who was considering such a move?

Absolutely! It’s a brilliant place to live and work and has so many opportunities once qualified.

Please describe your role at Crowe Morgan and what you consider to be the most important qualities you need in your role?

My role varies from day to day but broadly it includes preparing company accounts, VAT returns and personal tax returns. I also prepare payroll for clients and complete company  and Trust administration. You need to have good organisation and attention to detail.

What motivates you most about working for Crowe Morgan?

I really enjoy the variety of work that my role at Crowe Morgan provides. I am experiencing all the different sectors of the business. It’s a steep learning curve but I love the challenge!

What advice would you give to someone who is considering a career in accountancy?

Go for it! It is a varied and interesting sector that is constantly evolving making for a challenging and rewarding career.
