Jennifer Green – Finance Manager

Did you start your career as a school leaver or graduate?

I started my accountancy career in later life. I began my ACCA studies whilst working full time in a Finance role at a major bank. This also coincided with raising two very young children and so the journey took a bit longer than most of the colleagues I work with at Crowe Morgan.

What did you want to be when you were at school?

I wanted to be an artist. After completing my A-Levels I completed a foundation course in Art and Design at the Isle of Man College. Living on a small island there is not much opportunity to pursue a full-time career in art and so I decided accountancy would be the path I would follow to support myself and my family.

I am still a keen artist outside of work and have a studio and kiln for my ceramics, this has meant I have a struck a good work life balance.

What qualifications/training do you need for your role?

I am in the unique position that I joined Crowe Morgan as a qualified accountant to work as the internal accountant for the company.

Having gained my qualification whilst working in banking there were areas that I did not have any experience in and so I was kindly given the chance to work for a Company where the fundamentals of accountancy are crucial.

What motivates you most about working for Crowe Morgan?

Since joining the company a little over a year ago I have learned a great deal and am still learning new things every day.

The people I work with are great and make it a joy to come into work, even with having over 60 staff it is a very close knit environment, and those around me have been very supportive through the challenges that life throws my way.

What are the most important qualities you need in your role?

Organisation is key to my role as tasks can vary greatly day to day, including completing work to deadlines and ensuring all my duties are carried out accurately and efficiently.

Being personable is also an important part of my role as I receive a lot of queries from my colleagues and try to help with anything that comes my way.

What advice would you give to someone who is considering a career in accountancy?

Accountancy is a career path that requires a lot of commitment to gain your qualification but with a bit of hard work and dedication the benefits are worth it.

In an ever-changing world accountancy is a very stable industry and so there will always be opportunities for an accountant to progress their career.
